I am unapologetically, unabashedly, an old school free hand artist. I have nothing against tools like tracing paper and projectors to make life easier. I also don't have anything specific against digital art. I realize creating digitally also takes skill and imagination. Neither digital nor free hand created art is better.
But, for me, if I'm painting with pastels I want the mess. I want my fingers to turn the colors of the chalk. And when painting with watercolors I want to be forced to be remember not to drink the watercolor water by mistake. And, even if I were to paint with oils, I would want the smell of linseed oil and the mess and the forever it takes for it to dry.
I know that one of the things that digital artists like is the forgiving nature of digital. You can go back and make changes in previous steps or layers with a quick click. It doesn't work that way in hands on art. Some mediums are a little bit forgiving, but frequently there is no choice but to trash it and start over. I like knowing that.

Artists in the far east show depth in their art by more sub...

I know I too sometimes fall into the trap of making art pretty, but devoid of any sort of emotion or challenge. Just another pretty picture. Do you remember the likes of Jackson Pollock back in the 60's? I do. Was that art then? Is "pour art" art now? Does art have to be pretty? Do you have to know how to draw before you paint?
I have far more questions than an...
